Useful tips for safe driving on Namibia's diverse roads from gravel highways to desert tracks.
Driving in Namibia
While the majority of Namibia's roads are gravel, they are kept in good condition and will take you to areas of breathtaking beauty. However, they can be dangerous if you're unfamiliar with this type of driving.
At Namibia2Go we strive to offer you a seamless experience here are the key points to be aware of.
Namibia drives on the left side. On quiet gravel roads, drive more toward the centre except around corners, blind rises, or oncoming traffic.
Gravel and speed are the main causes of tourist accidents. Maintain safe speeds 120 km/h on tar, 80 km/h on gravel. Adjust lower if conditions deteriorate.
Gravel offers less grip. Reduce speed significantly, increase braking distances, and drive on existing tracks for better surface grip.
Stay well behind other vehicles to avoid dust and flying rocks. Use your lights in dusty conditions for better visibility.
Animals often wander across roads at night. In winter, the sun sets by 18:15 and it's dark within 20 minutes. Plan routes carefully.
Watch for animals and unexpected hazards. Changes in road colour may indicate surface condition changes. Stay alert at all times.
